Deborah Potter Receives Leadership in Law Award from the Daily Record

Growing up as a competitive three sport athlete — volleyball, basketball and softball, Deborah Potter was drawn to litigation because she always found trial work very akin to game situations. “It requires preparation, a game plan and execution,” she said. “…I always feel at home in the courtroom.”

The daughter of a firefighter and a school secretary, she was the first in her family to attend and graduate college — University of Maryland College Park and UM School of Law. Being a lawyer was “just something I was always going to do,” she said.

Opening Potter Law, LLC in 2016, she focuses her caseload on personal injury. “I really enjoy helping people who (experienced an) unexpected and unwanted event and trying to help them get back on their feet and get their life back together,” she said.

The cases that haunt and stay with her are the ones where her securing financial compensation for a victim(s) can’t undo the harm they or family members have endured due to negligence.

Potter is extremely involved in a number of legal organizations including serving on the boards of the Anne Arundel and Prince George’s County Bar associations, and the Maryland Association for Justice. She is also on the Maryland State Bar Association’s Board of Governors and is secretary-elect.

“I thrive on (the work) and I believe in giving back and not just being a hermit in your office,” she said. “Relationships with fellow bar members and relationships with judges all make our job more tolerable and easier. I wish everyone would be involved. …I spread myself around and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Potter was also a founding member of the Anne Arundel CASA and received their Generous Heart Award in 2016.
