What is Distracted Driving?

Roadways can be a dangerous place. Regardless of where you live, or why you’re on the road, the risks seem to be increasing each year. By participating in distracted driving behaviors, your risk of hurting yourself or someone on the road around you increases instantly.

Driving while distracted is much more dangerous than you may think. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving claimed 2,841 lives in 2018 alone. Among those killed: 1,730 drivers, 605 passengers, 400 pedestrians, and 77 bicyclists.

Distracted driving is a term used to describe any activity that diverts attention from driving. This usually includes talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, or fiddling with the stereo, entertainment, or navigation system. Overall it refers to anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving.

Additional behaviors or factors that could contribute to distracted driving include but are not limited to:

  • Alcohol or Drug Impairment
  • Drowsy Driving
  • Speeding
  • Road Rage
  • Inclement Weather
  • Night Driving
  • Running Red Lights
  • Defective or Damaged Vehicle Parts
  • Distracting Passengers
  • Reckless Behavior
  • Tailgating
  • Unsafe Lane Changes

You cannot drive safely unless the task of driving has your full attention. Any non-driving activity you engage in while behind the wheel is a potential distraction and increases your risk of crashing.

It is important to understand how easily you can fall into these behaviors and distractions, as well as how deadly they can be. The more people that practice safe, conscientious driving can help keep the roads safer for everyone.
